"Meaning and Mischief"

Wowza. I wish I was on this roof with these Jeff Koons sculptures right now.

My relationship to Koon's art has changed throughout the years The first piece of art that I can clearly recall hating was Koon's "The New Shelton Wet/Dry Triple Decker" (1981) at The Des Moines Art Center.

As an elementary age student, I thought it was so stupid. I still don't really like it. Koons has been through many incarnations as an artist. The art he made with his porn-star ex-wife was too much for me.

It took me a little while to decide how I felt about this balloon art. It's catchy, but I thought maybe it was too pop for me. The red sculpture below is in front of 7 World Trade Center directly in front of Ground Zero, and although I thought it looked like a pile of shiny dog poop when photographed from the 29th floor of 7WTC, in person in allows for a kind of literal reflection that is apropos for it's location.

Seeing the picture at the top (which is from the New York Times and accompanied this article, is on the roof at The Met) I know realize that I just kind of want to hang out with them.

The distance allows for a neat perspective (while not making them look like poo), and the backdrop is stunning. Here's hoping I make it to NYC this summer!
